Command 6: Down
โDownโ is a command that encourages a calm, relaxed state and is excellent for impulse control. It is also useful in public settings, allowing your dog to settle quietly.
Why โDownโ Matters
โDownโ provides:
- A default calming position for anxious or over-excited dogs.
- Control in busy environments.
- A comfortable resting position during longer โStays.โ
How to Teach โDownโ
- Lure from โSitโ: Ask your dog to โSit.โ Hold a high-value treat near their nose.
- Arc Downward: Slowly move the treat straight down towards the floor, then slowly away from them, creating an โLโ shape.
- Body Mechanics: As your dog follows the treat, their body will naturally lower into a down position.
- Mark and Reward: The instant their elbows touch the floor, mark (โYesโ or click) and give the treat.
- Add the Cue: After a few successful repetitions, introduce the verbal cue โDownโ just as they begin to lower their body.
- Practice: Repeat in various locations and with different distractions once your dog reliably goes โDownโ in a quiet environment.
Troubleshooting: If your dog stands up, you moved the lure too far forward. If they only โSit,โ you did not move the lure far enough away. Adjust the lure to guide their nose and body smoothly.
